FSL Consultant

“Field service has been a consistent thread throughout my career, from early on, working as a carpet cleaning technician, to IT consulting, damage restoration, and eventually supervising field engineers in the western half of the United States for a global medical simulation company.”

Your Work

How did you get started with Salesforce?

When a company I worked for implemented Salesforce, my team became heavily reliant on Salesforce Field Service, so it made sense not only to learn all I could about it, but to understand how it helped us work more cohesively with other departments using Service Cloud and Sales Cloud. The more I learned, the more excited I got about what was possible, so I started working as closely as I could with our IT team and stakeholders from other departments toward great solutions.

What’s your favorite thing about building solutions with Salesforce?

The platform is a great balance between ready-made elements and flexibility. It makes tailoring specific solutions very efficient — the answer is almost always, “Yes, there is a way to do that.”

What energizes you at work?

I enjoy finding clean solutions to complex problems. Whenever I learn of a client’s pain points and I can make them go away, I’m having a good day.

Name a work achievement you’re proud of.

Before I became a consultant, I got to build and present a Field Service prototype completely on my own in a dev org, as part of an effort to get stakeholder buy-in on some features that weren’t yet in use. The questions that came in during that presentation were more and more pointed and interested, and several of the top priorities from that presentation have since been implemented. It felt like a huge win.

Your Mindset

Who or what inspires you?

I’ve always been more generalist than specialist, so people who have mastered specific disciplines fascinate me. One of my favorite ways to kill time is falling down a YouTube rabbit hole of artists, builders, woodworkers, musicians… all breaking down their technique, comparing tools and discussing why they did or didn’t like elements of their output. One thing they all seem to have in common is that they believe they can always improve, and I find that incredibly inspiring.

What’s one thing you’re learning now? (professional or personal)

I’m currently learning CPQ, both because there are more and more opportunities to integrate quoting and field service, and also because, like Salesforce Field Service, CPQ’s extension of the platform has its own logic and feel. It has already taught me things about the platform I would have had a hard time learning otherwise.

What three words would your friends use to describe you?

 Very. Deep. Voice.

Just For Fun

What’s something you love about the place you live?

I have awesome access to nature here. Hiking and trail running start about 200 yards from my door, and I live about 45 minutes from Lake Tahoe.

What could we find you doing outside of work?

Maker-type projects. If I think I can make it out of wood, PVC or EMT conduit, I will probably try.

What trend do you hope makes a comeback?

Online poker

What’s your go-to karaoke song?
